Owner’s Blog – Vol. 2

Hello, and welcome back to the Owner’s Blog – Vol. 2! As you may recall, in my previous blog, I talked about the early years of CMH and how we got our start. I talked about the variety of different projects CMH pursued and the work we completed. I also mentioned that CMH changed direction and decided to solely focus on basement finishing projects. If I remember correctly, this change was made in late 2016, with our first full year of focusing on basement projects coming in 2017.

This was an exciting but scary decision to make as a company. On the one hand, basement projects had always been one of our more successful projects to complete for a homeowner – they always seemed to run smoother for us than a room addition or a kitchen remodel. This was a very appealing type of project for CMH to build; however, on the other hand, by limiting ourselves to just one type of project, I feared it could be difficult to find enough work to keep everyone working efficiently and for the company to operate profitably. Fortunately, it has worked out well for us over the past seven years as we have remained committed to and focused on basement finishing projects!

In our industry, we often see our competitors advertise that they specialize in about a dozen different things. I can’t count the number of times I have followed a company truck from another company with a laundry list of items they “specialize” in building. Often, the list contains things that are not even slightly related to each other – things like roofing and power-washing or concrete and painting. As I read these, I often wonder how someone could “specialize” in such a vast array of work.

I believe our competitors’ pride gets in the way of their business sense. They want to offer all of these services, but my guess is that they only truly want to do one or two of the projects they have listed.

At CMH, since all we do is finish basements, we can focus all our time and energy on looking for ways to improve our approach – part of what we refer to as The CMH Difference. We tailor our systems to best suit the needs of a basement project and don’t have to worry about creating processes for other types of projects. We believe this gives us an advantage over any of our competitors. Everything we do is focused on making the process of finishing a basement as efficient and economical as possible for our clients. We feel we’ve been successful in delivering for our clients, which shows in our reviews and the pictures of the projects we share on our website.
